How to build your own robot.

7 06 2010

Over the past two weeks I have built my very own robot and I will share my process with you.

I started where anyone should and idea. Here is my quick pen and watercolor sketch.

3 x 7 quick sketch. As you can see here the robot is very large, taller than buildings.

And a tad bit angry.

From the sketch I was able to draw up some blueprints.  At this stage I made some changes from my sketch.  Instead of a spinning saw blade hand, he now has more functionality with claw hands.

My blue print is in pencil on 140# Arches Cold Press.

There is where I put in most of my time.  The actual construction of the robot.

My tools were my seven piece Koh-I-Noor Rapidograph pen set.  The pens vary in sizes from hair size line to 1/8 of an inch thick.

Here are some process pictures.

And finally done with the pen.

He was looking pretty cool at this point, but I knew a few coats of paint would really make it come to life.

It was time to get the watercolors out again.

Here is a picture after the primer coat.

More color….

I’m just about done at this point.

Here is my final finished robot.

I’m so proud of my little guy.  Look at him blowing up buildings and destroying a city.  Makes me proud.
